How to Upload and Read PDFs in Qwen Chat

To upload and read a PDF in Qwen Chat, open the official Qwen assistant, sign in if prompted, start a new conversation, attach your file, and wait for the upload to finish. Then ask a focused question, such as extracting dates, summarizing one section, or checking a table. Keep the original PDF open so you can verify the answer and its page references.

Last reviewed: October 12, 2026. This guide is based on public official sources. The signed-in upload interface was not retested for this update; menu labels and account allowances may differ.

Qwen PDF: the essential answers

QuestionPractical answer
Where do I upload a PDF?Use Qwen Chat. Start a new conversation and look for the attachment control beside the message box.
Do I need an API key?The consumer chat workflow does not require a developer API key. Sign in if the service asks you to.
What can I ask about a document?Try a summary, fact extraction, a table, a comparison, or a translation. Check the result against the source.
Can it read scanned pages? Results depend on the scan and the service’s processing. Start with a clear page and verify what was actually recovered.
What are the upload limits?Follow the limits shown in your account. Developer API limits do not establish consumer-chat limits.
Should I upload a confidential PDF?Read the privacy and training section first, and confirm that the document and intended use are permitted.

The consumer Service Agreement limits the service to private, non-commercial use. The examples below are for personal reading and learning with fictional documents or material you are permitted to upload.

How to upload a PDF to Qwen Chat

  1. Open the official assistant. Visit chat.qwen.ai and sign in if prompted.
  2. Start a new conversation. This makes it easier to keep the new document separate from earlier attachments and instructions.
  3. Find the attachment control. Look beside the message box for a file, paperclip, or plus control. Use the file-upload option shown in your interface.
  4. Select the PDF. Begin with a small file whose contents you can check. Confirm that you have chosen the intended version.
  5. Wait for the upload to finish. Check that the correct filename appears and that any progress indicator has completed. A failed or unfinished upload is not ready for questions.
  6. Ask one clear question. Name the section or facts you need, the output format, and how Qwen should handle missing information. Use one of the prompts below.
  7. Check the answer in the PDF. Verify names, dates, numbers, quotations, and page references before relying on them.
  8. Follow up on a specific gap. Ask about one omitted field, unreadable passage, or incorrect page reference instead of repeatedly requesting a complete new analysis.

For Android, the official Google Play listing is Qwen Studio by Alibaba Cloud. Its attachment controls may differ from the web interface. Use the file picker available in your app and check that the selected file is attached before sending the question.

If you need to install the app or switch devices, use our Qwen app download guide to find the official route for your platform.

Check the PDF before asking questions

A PDF that looks clear on screen may contain selectable text, scanned page images, or a mixture. Check which type you have before trying to fix a poor answer.

PDF typeHow to recognize itWhat to check
Searchable textYou can select a sentence and search for a word.Reading order, columns, headings, and copied characters.
Scanned or image-only pagesThe page looks like a picture and text cannot be selected.Sharpness, rotation, small print, handwriting, shadows, and missing edges.
Scan with an OCR text layerText is selectable, but copying it produces errors. The text layer against the visible page; OCR mistakes can survive later analysis.
Mixed documentSome pages have selectable text and others are images.A sample from each page type, rather than only the first page.
Tables and chartsMeaning depends on rows, columns, axes, legends, or footnotes.Units, signs, totals, row alignment, and the notes that qualify values.
Protected or interactive PDFThe file needs a password or contains forms, layers, or attachments.Whether the upload works and which visible content is actually understood.
  • Open the file locally and confirm that the pages are complete and readable.
  • Try selecting and copying a sentence. Compare the copied text with the page.
  • Note whether the viewer’s page position differs from the page number printed inside the document.
  • Remove content you should not share, and keep the original unchanged when making a cleaned, rotated, or OCR-processed copy.

Copyable prompts for Qwen PDF analysis

Specify the task, the evidence you need, and the response format. Ask Qwen to identify missing or unreadable information rather than fill gaps. These are suggested prompts, not examples of verified model output.

Extract facts with page evidence

Use only the attached PDF.

Extract these fields:
[List the names, dates, definitions, figures, or other facts you need.]

Return a table:
Field | Answer | PDF viewer page | Printed page label | Short supporting excerpt

If a field is absent, write "Not stated."
If it is unreadable, write "Unable to verify."
Do not infer missing values or browse the web.
If you cannot identify a page reliably, say so rather than inventing a reference.

Summarize a document or one section

Summarize [the whole PDF / the named section] for [audience].
Use only the attached document. Aim for [word count] words.

Include:
1. The main purpose or question.
2. The most important points.
3. Key numbers, with units and page references.
4. Limitations, exceptions, or conflicting statements.
5. Information the document does not provide.

Separate the author's conclusions from your interpretation.
Preserve qualifiers such as "up to," "estimated," and "subject to."
Flag passages you could not read.

Extract a table and check a calculation

For practice, use a fictional shopping list or a personal expense table. Extract the rows before requesting arithmetic so that an incorrect total can be traced to its source.

Use only the table on [page or section] of the attached PDF.

First reproduce:
Item | Quantity | Unit price | Currency | Status | Source page

Then:
1. Identify rows excluded by the document's own rules.
2. Show each calculation and the subtotal.
3. Add only taxes, fees, or discounts stated in the PDF.
4. Show the final total and formula.

Preserve negative signs, decimal separators, units, and footnotes.
Flag ambiguous cells before calculating. Do not invent missing charges.

Study a research paper or sample policy

Use a paper, public sample policy, or fictional agreement that you are allowed to upload for personal study. Adapt the requested fields to the document instead of asking for a general verdict.

Read only the attached document for personal study.

Identify:
- Its purpose and intended audience.
- The claims, methods, rules, or obligations it explicitly states.
- Supporting evidence or relevant clauses.
- Dates, deadlines, exceptions, and limitations.
- Ambiguous terms and questions that remain unanswered.

For each important point, give the section and a checkable page reference.
Distinguish the document's wording from your interpretation.
Do not treat the answer as professional advice or add unstated requirements.

Compare two or more PDFs

Compare the attached PDFs using only their contents.

Return a table:
Topic | Source filename | Statement or value | Page reference | Agreement or conflict

Keep each document's evidence separate.
Include publication or revision dates when stated.
Do not average conflicting figures or assume that the newest file is authoritative.
List missing information and unresolved conflicts.
If you cannot access an attachment, identify it before comparing.

A request to use only the PDF is a scope instruction. It does not independently prove that every sentence came from the file. For document-only work, disable web-search tools where your interface offers that control, and verify the evidence yourself.

Verify answers, page references, and calculations

A correct fact can come with an incorrect page number. Treat the answer and its citation as two separate things to check. Keep the original PDF open throughout your review.

Part of the answerHow to verify it
A name, date, or quotationSearch the PDF, open the matching passage, and read the surrounding sentences for qualifications or exceptions.
A page referenceCheck both the viewer’s page position and the document’s printed label. Covers, contents pages, and Roman numerals can create offsets.
A table valueTrace it to the correct row, column heading, unit, and footnote. Watch for shifted columns and missing negative signs.
A calculationConfirm the extracted inputs first, then recalculate independently with a calculator or spreadsheet.
A chart interpretationInspect the axes, scale, legend, and units. Identify whether a value was printed or estimated from the drawing.
A conclusionCheck whether the source states it, supports only part of it, or leaves it as an interpretation.

If a reference fails, tell Qwen exactly what you found: for example, “The cited page does not contain this amount. Find the original passage or mark it as unverified.” Do not repeatedly accept a replacement page number without opening it.

For a translation, compare key terminology, names, numbers, negation, and conditions with the original. A fluent translation can still change the meaning. Cite the underlying document when reusing its facts.

Scanned PDFs and OCR: what to do when text is missed

With a scan, first check what Qwen can recover from one clear page. Poor results can come from the document image, an existing text layer, or the way the service processes the file. This guide does not attribute consumer PDF processing to a specific OCR engine.

  1. Choose a small page range. Ask for a few visible names, dates, or amounts before requesting a complete summary.
  2. Inspect the source. Look for blur, rotation, shadows, cropped margins, faint text, handwriting, and dense columns.
  3. Improve an authorized working copy. Rotate pages correctly, obtain a clearer scan, or create a searchable OCR copy when appropriate.
  4. Verify the OCR output. Compare it with the page image. Pay particular attention to decimal marks, Arabic or other right-to-left text, and table reading order.
  5. Repeat the narrow question. Record which version was uploaded so you can tell whether preprocessing helped.
Examine only pages [range] of the attached PDF.

Return:
Visible heading | Exact date or amount | Page reference | Uncertainty

Transcribe what is visible. Do not silently correct uncertain characters.
For blurred, cropped, or unreadable content, write "Unable to verify."
Do not summarize the rest of the document.

If an OCR-processed copy works better, that establishes a difference between your files; it does not identify which internal component Qwen used. Keep the original available for comparison.

Handle long documents and multiple files in stages

A successful upload does not prove that every page was covered in the answer. Break a long task into stages that you can verify before asking for a final synthesis.

StageWhat to ask forWhat you verify
Map the documentA list of sections and their approximate page ranges. The real contents page, headings, and page labels.
Select the relevant pagesThe sections needed to answer your specific question. That important definitions, appendices, or exceptions were not omitted.
Extract the evidenceA short fact table with filenames and page references. The original text, figures, units, and qualifications.
Compare and resolve gapsA list of conflicting statements and unanswered questions.Which source supports each claim and whether a conflict remains unresolved.
Build the final answerA synthesis using the evidence you have checked. That the synthesis has not introduced new unsupported claims.

If you need to split a document, use filenames that preserve the original page ranges, such as reading-notes-pages-001-020.pdf. Keep a table with its heading, continuation rows, and footnotes. Distinguish the page position inside each split file from the original document’s numbering.

For multiple attachments, use distinct filenames and assign each a role. If the interface does not accept them together, analyze them separately and compare the verified extracts. Do not interpret a comparison request as proof that every attachment was accessible.

Run a small PDF check before relying on the workflow

You can evaluate the checks that matter to your task with a short fictional document. Write down the expected facts before uploading it, then compare the first answer with those facts. The following is a suggested procedure, not a reported benchmark.

CheckWhat to prepareWhat to assess
Fact extractionA short text PDF with a few names and dates; deliberately omit one requested field.Correct extraction and an explicit indication that the missing field is not stated.
Page referencesTwo pages with different facts and clearly printed page labels.Whether each reference leads to the right page and passage.
Scan handlingA page-image copy of the same permitted sample.Which facts survive the conversion and which become unreadable or misattributed.
Table calculationA simple fictional table whose total you calculate independently.Correct row extraction, exclusions, units, arithmetic, and final total.

Keep the file, prompt, answer, date, and visible settings together. A successful small check supports that particular result; it does not establish performance on a long, degraded, or differently structured PDF.

Is Qwen PDF analysis free, and what are the limits?

The official Qwen overview describes the consumer assistant as free to use and lists document processing. That does not establish unlimited uploads or identical access for every account. Follow any allowance, usage, or upgrade notice shown in your interface. See our Qwen pricing guide for the distinction between consumer access and developer products.

Limit or conditionWhat to rely on
PDF file sizeThe current upload notice or rejection message in your Qwen account.
PDF page countAny limit stated in the consumer interface; no universal public consumer maximum was verified for this guide.
Attachments per messageThe number accepted by your current composer.
Daily or monthly usageThe allowance or account notice shown for the feature you are using.
Model and tool accessThe choices available in your account, which may differ across platforms or change over time.

A model’s context length is not a PDF page allowance. A short document can contain dense tables or scanned images, while a longer one may contain little text. Judge the answer by the evidence it covers, and use the account’s upload notices for its actual limits.

Privacy and confidential PDFs

Before uploading a document, read the Qwen Service Agreement (effective September 10, 2026) and Privacy Policy (effective September 7, 2026). These are the consumer-service policies relevant to this guide.

TopicWhat the current policy saysWhat it means for a PDF upload
Uploaded contentThe Privacy Policy includes prompts, files, and other submitted material in the content Qwen may collect.Review the document itself, including personal information embedded in its pages.
Model trainingThe Privacy Policy permits training and improvement using de-identified user content and feedback. It says raw input is not used directly to train models.Do not describe uploaded content as excluded from all training.
Training opt-outThe Service Agreement provides an opt-out by notifying [email protected]. After opt-out, content is no longer used for training, but feedback about content remains an exception.A training choice has limits; feedback is not covered by the same exclusion.
FeedbackThe Privacy Policy says feedback can include the conversation associated with a rating.Consider the associated conversation before submitting feedback about a sensitive document.

Training opt-out, deletion, and confidentiality are separate questions. An opt-out request does not itself delete an uploaded file or promise to reverse earlier training. The Privacy Policy allows some retention for stated purposes after account deletion and does not guarantee absolute security. If a document requires contractual confidentiality or specific handling controls, establish those requirements before choosing a service.

Prepare a file that is appropriate to share

  • Exclude passwords, API keys, and access credentials. The Service Agreement expressly excludes sensitive data such as keys and credentials from permitted inputs.
  • Check your rights and purpose. Possessing a PDF does not automatically mean you may upload it. For client or business work, choose a service whose applicable terms and data controls permit that use.
  • Minimize personal or confidential material. Use only the pages and fields needed for a permitted task; leave out unrelated identity details, account numbers, and private records.
  • Redact the underlying content. A black rectangle is insufficient if the text remains underneath. Reopen the cleaned copy, try selecting and searching for the removed values, and inspect it before uploading.

If you want to request a training opt-out, use the contact route in the agreement and retain the correspondence. Do not assume a request deletes existing conversations or guarantees a particular completion time. For deletion or other data-rights requests, follow the separate procedures in the Privacy Policy.

Qwen Chat PDF upload vs Model Studio PDF Understanding

Alibaba Cloud’s Model Studio PDF Understanding is a separate developer route. Its limits, billing, and contract must be checked separately from the consumer assistant.

PointQwen ChatModel Studio PDF Understanding
WorkflowAttach a file in the consumer conversation interface.Send a PDF by URL or Base64 from an application.
AccessConsumer account when required; no developer key for ordinary chat.Alibaba Cloud account, workspace, regional endpoint, and API key.
Document limitsUse the limits displayed in the account.150 MB and 256 pages, according to the API documentation.

IntegrationThe controls provided by the chat interface.OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions or DashScope.
BillingConsumer-account access and allowance rules.Model token charges plus a PDF parsing fee: ¥0.02/page in Beijing or ¥0.024/page in Singapore.

The API documentation currently lists qwen3.8-max, qwen3.8-max-0902, qwen3.8-flash, and qwen3.8-27b; PDF understanding with qwen3.8-27b is Beijing-only. It also warns that PDF delivery through the Responses API is unsupported: a request may return HTTP 200 without delivering the file to the model.

For implementation, use the linked documentation and our Qwen API guide. The API’s 150 MB and 256-page figures are not verified Qwen Chat limits.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an API key to upload a PDF to Qwen Chat?

No developer API key is required for the ordinary consumer attachment workflow. Open the official assistant and sign in if prompted. An API key belongs to the separate developer integration.

Is reading PDFs in Qwen Chat free?

The official overview advertises free consumer access. Your account’s feature availability and usage notices determine what you can use; free access is not a promise of unlimited document analysis.

What is Qwen Chat’s maximum PDF size or page count?

No universal public consumer maximum was verified for this guide. Follow the limit shown in the current interface. The separate API specifications should not be used as the answer for Qwen Chat.

Can Qwen read scanned PDFs or handwriting?

Try a small, clear sample and verify the transcription. Blur, rotation, faint text, handwriting, and complex layouts can make a document harder to interpret. A successful result on one page does not establish accuracy on every scan.

Can Qwen translate or compare PDFs?

You can request a translation or a comparison of accessible attachments. Specify the target language or comparison fields, keep filenames separate, and verify the result. These requests do not guarantee preserved page layout or complete coverage of every file.

Can Qwen read a password-protected PDF?

Do not assume support. Follow the interface response and, if you are entitled to do so, create an authorized unprotected working copy. Confirm that the content is accessible before asking for analysis.

Is it safe to upload a confidential PDF?

Do not assume that a training opt-out makes a document confidential. Check permission to share it, the intended use, and the Privacy Policy. If the file requires a confidentiality agreement or particular data controls, confirm those requirements before using a service. Remove unnecessary sensitive content.

Can I stop Qwen from using my PDF content for training?

The Service Agreement provides an opt-out through [email protected], with an exception for feedback about content. Opting out is separate from deleting data and does not promise removal of material from models already trained.
