How to read PDFs with Kimi

To ask Kimi about a PDF, open the official Kimi chat, start a new conversation, attach the file through the plus menu, and ask a question that names the facts you need. Then open the PDF and check both the answer and its page references. In our small first-run test, Kimi handled an order table and a clean image-only PDF, but missed or blurred five required details in a selectable-text PDF. A polished table was not proof of a complete reading.

This guide shows the browser steps, two copyable prompts, the actual first answers and the original files. The three PDF tests used Kimi’s consumer chat on 23 September 2026. We checked the upload menu again on 29 September; the recorded answers remain from the original tests. This guide does not evaluate the developer API or establish general accuracy.

Upload a PDF to the official Kimi chat

Use the ordinary chat at kimi.ai and choose Add files & images from the plus menu. In our three PDF tests, this route worked without switching to Docs mode. Follow these steps, then check the answer against your file.

  1. Start a fresh chat. Sign in if prompted. Keep one PDF and its questions in that conversation.
  2. Open the plus menu beside the composer. Choose Add files & images, select the PDF, and wait until its filename and size replace the upload progress.
  3. Say exactly what you need from the file. Tell Kimi to use only the file, request the exact fields or table rows you need, and define how to label absent information. Asking for a page number makes the claim easier to check; it does not make the number independently verified.
  4. Verify before reuse. Compare every critical date, amount, name and condition with the PDF. Check the reported page separately, especially where a document has a cover page or printed page numbers that differ from the viewer’s positions.
Kimi chat with the attachment menu open and Add files & images as its first option.
The upload menu on Kimi’s signed-out web page, checked on 29 September 2026. Choose Add files & images to start attaching a PDF; sign in if prompted. The K3 High label belongs to this interface screenshot, not the September 23 tests. View full-size screenshot.

This route is for reading an existing PDF in consumer chat. For making, editing or reformatting a PDF, Kimi describes a separate Docs workflow. An API integration is a different task; see our Kimi API guide. ChinaAI is an independent guide and does not process the files you send to the official Kimi site.

A precise prompt for facts and page locations

We used the following exact prompt for both forms of the fictional two-page event brief. Replace the fields with your own document’s facts:

Use only the attached PDF. Return a table with Field, Answer, and PDF page for: event date, session start/end, venue, capacity, ticket price, refund deadline, access instruction, contact telephone. If a fact is absent, write "Not stated" and use "-" for its page. Then add one sentence describing what visitors should bring. Do not browse the web or infer missing details.

You can try it with our selectable-text event brief and clean image-only version. Both have the same two-page content. Our screenshots and full first answers below show why you still need to check the original.

Before you upload your own file

Use only material you are allowed to share. Kimi’s privacy policy includes uploaded files in user content and describes processing for service provision and improvement, including AI-model training and optimisation. Review the current policy and your organisation’s rules before sending sensitive material. All three files in our test are fictional.

What Kimi returned in three first answers

We uploaded one PDF per fresh conversation and sent one request for each. There were no corrective follow-ups or regenerated answers. Each file displayed a completed attachment state. The answer records, source files and account settings and test limits are available below.

Sample and taskObserved first answerWhat to watch
Two-page text PDF: extract event factsFour of nine predeclared factual checks passed. Six of seven source-page values matched. It omitted the year, marked the session time absent, shortened the venue, missed the GBP 7.50 amount and dropped the step-free condition from the entrance instruction.
One-page order PDF: copy rows and totalAll four rows, inclusion rule, line totals and GBP 65.00 final amount matched the source.Kimi’s initial read lacked the discount amount; it invoked a built-in Python tool during the same first response to recover it.
Same event brief as clean image-only pagesAll nine factual checks and all seven page values matched in this attempt.A clean 150-DPI synthetic PDF is not a test of blurry scans, handwriting or repeatability.

For each event brief, the nine checks covered date, start/end time, full venue, capacity, price, refund deadline, step-free entrance, absent telephone and the instruction to bring water. Seven fields needed a page number; “Not stated” used “-” and the final sentence did not require a page. These counts describe this small task, not an accuracy rate for Kimi.

The consequential miss in a readable text PDF

Page 1 of the source states 14 October 2026, 18:30–20:00, Maple Room, Westbridge Library and GBP 7.50. Kimi’s first answer returned “14 October”, “Not stated” for the time, “Maple Room, Westbridge” and “GBP (no amount stated)”. It placed the absent time on page “-”. The output looked tidy but could mislead someone planning to attend or buy a ticket.

Kimi's first text-PDF answer omits the event year, time, part of the venue and ticket amount.
Actual first answer for the selectable-text file. Compare the date, time, venue and price with page 1 of the original PDF. Select the image for the full-size capture.

The refund date, absent telephone and bring-water note were handled correctly. The access row named the South Entrance and the ramp repair on the correct page, but omitted that the route was for visitors needing step-free access. We counted that as incomplete. A partly correct response is precisely why checking only one familiar fact is insufficient.

A correct total, including the discount

Our fictional supply order contains three confirmed rows and one cancelled Posters row. Kimi reproduced all four rows and excluded Posters. Its first reading trace showed an incomplete discount figure; then, without another user message, it called its built-in Python tool and produced the correct GBP 3.30 discount and GBP 65.00 final amount. We did not manually select a coding tool.

Source-based stepAmount
Pencil sets: 8 × GBP 3.25GBP 26.00
Notebooks: 12 × GBP 2.40GBP 28.80
Folders: 5 × GBP 1.80GBP 9.00
Confirmed subtotal + delivery − discountGBP 63.80 + GBP 4.50 − GBP 3.30 = GBP 65.00
Posters: 10 × GBP 5.00Excluded: status Cancelled
Kimi's first supply-order answer shows GBP 65.00 due and excludes cancelled Posters.
Actual first answer’s calculation and exclusion. The built-in Python step happened within this same response; the screenshot shows the final answer, not a separate retry.
Copy the exact order-table prompt
Use only the attached PDF. First reproduce all four item rows with Item, Quantity, Unit price (GBP), and Status. Then calculate the amount due: show each included line total, the confirmed-items subtotal, delivery, discount, and final GBP total. Identify any excluded row and explain why it is excluded. Do not add taxes or other charges, and do not browse the web.

The clean image-only result

The image-only file has page pictures but no selectable text layer. Kimi’s first answer included all nine required facts, correctly put the refund and entrance instructions on page 2, and did not invent a telephone number. Unlike the text-PDF answer, this response preserved the event year, session time, full venue, ticket amount and step-free condition. With one run per file, this contrast does not establish that Kimi reads image-only PDFs better.

Kimi's first image-only PDF answer shows ticket price GBP 7.50, the page 2 refund and entrance details, and no stated telephone.
Actual first answer for the clean image-only file. This is one successful synthetic example, not a scan-quality or OCR benchmark.

How to verify a Kimi PDF answer

  1. Check each requested field against the original. The generated table can contain both correct and omitted facts. In our text example, the missing session time and price were visible on page 1.
  2. Check the exact condition and its page. The event brief accepts refund requests through 7 October 2026 on page 2. “Before 7 October” would mean something different. The returned page numbers in our answers were ordinary table text, not native clickable citations.
  3. Check absent data honestly. Neither event brief supplied a telephone number; “Not stated” was correct. Do not infer one from a website or another document unless your task explicitly permits it.
  4. For a table, check the copied rows before the total. Confirm quantities, unit prices, statuses and excluded rows, then recalculate line totals, fees and discounts. A plausible final amount can conceal a wrongly included row.

For a longer file, ask about a section or specific fields you can check. We have not tested this tactic for long-document errors, summary completeness or repeatability.

If the upload or answer looks wrong

What you seeWhat to check
The file is still uploadingWait for its filename and size or a visible error before sending. Our successful attachments reached that state; we did not benchmark upload time.
An upload limit or format errorRead the account’s exact message. Kimi’s current capability FAQ says PDF is supported and states 100 MB per file and up to 50 files at once; we tested three much smaller files separately, so those limits were not verified here and may differ by account or workflow.
Kimi says a visible fact is absentReopen the correct source file and find the field. Ask about that page or section and compare the new reply with the original; do not treat a follow-up as proof that the first answer was sound.
A page number seems wrongCompare PDF viewer positions with any printed page labels. Open the claimed page. A generated page number is an assertion to check.
The total seems wrongCheck row transcription, status and currency first, then recalculate the subtotal and each charge or discount independently.

Do I need Docs mode, an API key or a paid plan?

For the browser-chat route tested here, we used neither Docs mode nor an API key. The interface suggested Docs after attachment, but the ordinary chat accepted all three files. Our signed-in test account had a paid plan, so these results do not establish free-account access or allowances. Check Kimi pricing and access for plan distinctions. For creating or editing a document, see the separate Docs workflow.

Can Kimi summarise or read a scanned PDF?

The attachment workflow can be used to ask for a summary, but our prompts tested targeted extraction and a simple calculation, not summary completeness. Our image-only example used clean digitally rendered pages at 150 DPI. We did not test camera photos, physical scans, blur, skew, handwriting or a named OCR engine. Check any summary or extracted fact against the source.

Download the source PDFs and inspect every first answer

The original fictional samples are the text event brief, the image-only event brief and the supply order. We reused them unchanged from our earlier Qwen guide and collected new Kimi responses. The DeepSeek guide also uses these samples, but test dates and settings differ; this article makes no matched product comparison.

All figures below come only from the attached PDF.

## Item rows (reproduced in full)

| Item | Quantity | Unit price (GBP) | Status |
|---|---:|---:|---|
| Pencil sets | 8 | 3.25 | Confirmed |
| Notebooks | 12 | 2.40 | Confirmed |
| Folders | 5 | 1.80 | Confirmed |
| Posters | 10 | 5.00 | Cancelled |

## Amount due calculation

Only Confirmed rows are included, per the document.

Included line totals:

- Pencil sets: 8 × 3.25 = GBP 26.00
- Notebooks: 12 × 2.40 = GBP 28.80
- Folders: 5 × 1.80 = GBP 9.00

Confirmed-items subtotal: 26.00 + 28.80 + 9.00 = GBP 63.80

Delivery charge: + GBP 4.50 → 68.30

Order discount: − GBP 3.30 → 65.00

Final amount due: GBP 65.00

## Excluded row

- Posters — 10 × 5.00 = GBP 50.00 — excluded because its status is Cancelled, while the document instructs to include only Confirmed rows in the amount due.

No taxes or other charges have been added, as specified in the document.

Test conditions and limits — 23 September 2026

We used a signed-in account at kimi.ai. The account displayed Moderato; the chat selector displayed Instant High, with Instant selected in its expanded menu. The interface did not expose the exact serving checkpoint. We did not select Docs mode, a PDF plugin or the API. Your account’s controls and entitlements may differ.

The three September 23, 2026 (UTC) consumer-chat tests used one request per file. They excluded repeatability, the API, Docs mode, real scans, sensitive documents and large PDFs. Earlier guides used the same sources under different conditions, so this is not a controlled cross-app comparison.

Return to the Kimi overview for its other workflows. Send a reproducible correction through our contact page using a public source or non-sensitive sample. We will revisit this guide when Kimi changes its document controls, documented upload limits or an important test finding.
