Kimi Docs: create a Word document and check the file
Kimi Docs is Moonshot AI’s document agent for creating or working with Word and PDF files. To create a Word document, open Docs, supply your facts and request a .docx with the headings and tables you need. Download the file, compare it with your source and check every page break before sharing it.
ChinaAI is an independent publication, not Moonshot AI. This guide covers the consumer Kimi Docs interface, not the developer API or Kimi Code documentation. Below, follow a fictional workshop brief from the first Word file to a separate layout correction. The example shows what to check in your own document; it is not a general accuracy benchmark.

How to use Kimi Docs
Kimi’s help center describes typing a document task or uploading an existing Word/PDF file for work on that file. It says the completed document can be downloaded in its original format. The steps below follow our tested route: creating a new Word file from a typed source brief.
- Open the official Docs page. Sign in at kimi.ai/docs if prompted, and confirm the composer says Docs. A general chat answer containing formatted text is not proof that a Word file was made.
- Supply the source facts. Name the document’s reader and purpose. Supply exact dates, amounts and sections. Say what is unknown and forbid invented contacts or links. For an existing private file, first check your organisation’s upload rules and Kimi’s privacy policy.
- Ask for the file you need. Request an editable
.docx, meaningful headings and tables only where they help readers scan. State any calculation rules and the checks the document must pass. - Inspect the delivered file. Read the preview, download the DOCX and compare it with your source. Check the page break, not just the facts; a correct paragraph can still land in the wrong place.
Give Kimi the facts, format and missing details
A useful brief states who will read the document, what it must contain and which details are still missing. Our fictional workshop brief specified the venue, date, opening time, audience and staffing, five agenda blocks and two supplies lines. The registration link/contact and Wi-Fi capacity remained to be confirmed. We calculated the expected costs before sending the request: 24 × $0.18 = $4.32 for handouts, 5 × $1.20 = $6.00 for marker sets, and $10.32 overall.
Our request specified an internal organizer brief with an agenda table, supplies table and short checklist. It explicitly prohibited invented sponsors, fees, contacts and extra costs. This matters more than asking Kimi to “make a professional document”: the facts and omissions are visible, so another person can spot a changed date or fabricated registration link. The exact prompt and source brief are available below.
If you use Kimi for a real document, replace the fictional facts with material you are authorised to share. Keep a copy of the original source outside the AI output so you can compare both.
What the first delivered Word file contained
On 23 September 2026, one request produced a DOCX with native text, six styled section headings and three tables. It retained the source facts and $10.32 supplies total, but one short section split across the two pages in Kimi/WPS. The results below describe that unchanged first file; the later correction is shown separately.
| Check | First-file result | What still needs attention |
|---|---|---|
| Event facts | 17 October date, Room 2, 10:00–12:00 session, 09:45 doors, 14 October registration deadline and 24 participants, 3 facilitators and 2 volunteers as separate groups were retained. | We tested only this fictional source. |
| Agenda | All five time blocks appeared in order, from 10:00–10:10 welcome through 11:35–12:00 questions. | Recheck the schedule after any manual edit. |
| Supplies | The file showed $4.32 handouts, $6.00 marker sets and a $10.32 total, with the arithmetic stated. | The DOCX shows values, not a live spreadsheet formula. Recalculate after changing quantities or prices. |
| Unknowns and rules | The missing registration contact/link stayed “To confirm”; Wi-Fi capacity remained pending. The no-password-collection rule was preserved. No extra cost, fee or sponsor appeared. | Complete the pending operational details from an authorised source before sharing. |
| Word layout | The file opened as two pages in the Kimi/WPS online document viewer, with readable tables and no obvious clipping. | Partial: the “Open items — to confirm” section begins at the end of page 1 and its second bullet continues on page 2. See the September 25 correction for the separately revised file. |
The first file was a usable draft, with a layout issue to fix. Correct facts do not guarantee a finished document: check both the content and the page boundaries in the editor you intend to use.
Can Kimi fix a page break without changing the facts?
Yes, in this document after one targeted follow-up. On 25 September 2026, we reopened the original conversation and asked Kimi to keep the “Open items — to confirm” heading and both bullets together. We requested a separate DOCX and explicitly prohibited wording, number, font-size or margin changes. This was a second request on the same brief; the original file and its page-break problem are preserved above.
Kimi delivered North Quay Organizer Brief - layout revision.docx. We downloaded it through the same conversation’s All files panel, compared the actual file with the unchanged original and inspected both pages in the Kimi/WPS online viewer.
| Check | Original file | First revision |
|---|---|---|
| Open-items section | Heading and first bullet on page 1; second bullet on page 2. | Heading and both bullets together on page 2 in our online preview. |
| Text and numbers | The source facts, unknowns and $10.32 total were correct. | Body text, table cells, their order, headers and footers matched the original exactly. |
| Formatting | Six styled section headings and three native tables. | Those structures, fonts and margins were preserved. Pagination settings changed on the section heading and its first bullet. |
| Whole-file preview | Two pages, with a split section. | Still two pages. We saw no clipped tables, separated headings or extra blank page in this viewer. |

One important discrepancy: Kimi’s completion message said the section was together at the bottom of page 1. Our online viewer placed it at the top of page 2. The requested fix worked in that viewer, but the message did not accurately describe the page location we observed.
The revised file preserved the text, table content, fonts and margins while keeping the section together in Kimi/WPS. Desktop Word layout and an edit–save–reopen check were not tested. Open the file in your intended editor before treating the layout as final.
Read the exact layout-correction prompt
Please revise the Word document you delivered in this conversation: "North Quay Library Device Safety Workshop Organizer Brief.docx". This is a layout-only correction. In its online preview, section 5, "Open items — to confirm", starts at the bottom of page 1 and its second bullet continues on page 2. Keep that heading and both of its bullets together on one page. Preserve all existing wording, numbers, tables, row order, section order, headers and footers, including the $10.32 total, the unknown registration link/contact and the pending Wi-Fi capacity check. Do not add facts, research, or rewrite the text. Keep the current fonts, font sizes and margins; change only the pagination settings needed to fix this split. Check the whole document for clipped tables, orphaned headings and extra blank pages. Deliver a separate editable file named "North Quay Organizer Brief - layout revision.docx" without overwriting the original. State precisely what you changed.Download Kimi’s first revised DOCX (unmodified) or download the before/after files and revision records (ZIP). The original September 23 result remains available below.
For your own file, name the exact broken section, state what must remain unchanged, ask for a separate copy and compare the result. Kimi’s official editing guide describes a review-and-revise workflow; our test verifies only this particular layout correction.
Check a Kimi-generated Word document before using it
- Compare with the source, line by line. Mark exact names, dates, numbers, quoted wording and deliberately unknown details. In our file, the registration contact remained unresolved rather than being invented.
- Recalculate numbers independently. Treat a cost printed in a Word table as static text. Our two line totals matched the source, but changing the quantity in this file will not automatically recalculate the total.
- Inspect the actual DOCX. Confirm headings and tables are selectable text. Open a disposable copy in the Word-compatible editor you will use and make a small test edit. We checked native DOCX structure and an online preview; we did not perform a desktop Microsoft Word edit.
- Check every page boundary. Look for orphaned headings, split lists, clipped table cells and extra blank pages. Our original open-items section split across pages even though its content was correct; the follow-up fixed the split in the online preview.
- Resolve open items yourself. Fill missing links, contacts and approvals from your own records. Do not let an AI draft turn “to confirm” into a statement of fact.
If a document informs a legal, medical, financial or other consequential decision, use the original records and appropriate human review. This simple workshop brief cannot validate Kimi for those uses.
Download and open your Word file
Kimi says completed documents can be downloaded as DOCX. In our browser session, All files → Download all files delivered a ZIP containing the DOCX. If a download seems missing, check the browser’s download list and the All files panel before repeating the generation.
If the download is a ZIP, extract it and open the DOCX inside. Check its text, tables and page breaks in the editor you plan to use; our layout checks used Kimi/WPS, not desktop Word.
The account showed no request-specific credit or dollar amount, so this test does not establish a per-document price. See our Kimi plans guide for current membership context, and confirm the allowance shown in your own account.
For extracting facts from an existing PDF rather than generating a new Word brief, see our separate Kimi PDF reading test. For cells that must recalculate when inputs change, use the Kimi Sheets guide. These tasks have different checks and should not be treated as the same feature.
Download the original file and test records
Download the unchanged first delivered Word file (.docx). The test records (ZIP) include the fictional source, exact prompt, checks fixed before submission, file-level findings and a structural extraction. The sample uses fictional workshop details.
Read the exact one-request prompt
Create an editable Word document (.docx) titled "North Quay Library Device Safety Workshop Organizer Brief" from the source facts below. This is an internal organizer brief, not a public registration page. Make it easy to scan with clear headings, an agenda table, a small supplies-cost table, and a short organizer checklist. Calculate the two line totals and overall supplies total. Do not invent a registration link, contact person, sponsor, venue details, fee, additional costs or policy. Mark an item as "To confirm" if the source leaves it open. Keep the document concise and download-ready.
Source facts (fictional test material):
- Event: North Quay Library Device Safety Workshop.
- Venue: North Quay Library, Room 2.
- Date: 17 October 2026.
- Session: 10:00–12:00; doors open at 09:45.
- Audience and staffing: 24 adult participants, 3 facilitators and 2 volunteers.
- Registration closes on 14 October 2026. No registration URL or contact has been supplied.
- Participants bring their own device; the library supplies Wi-Fi.
- Do not collect or record participants' passwords.
- Agenda: 10:00–10:10 welcome; 10:10–10:35 account safety; 10:35–11:25 guided practice; 11:25–11:35 break; 11:35–12:00 questions.
- Supplies: 24 printed handouts at $0.18 each; 5 marker sets at $1.20 each. No other costs were provided.
- Internal decision still needed: confirm Wi-Fi capacity before registration closes.Test conditions and file checks
- Sessions: One creation request on 23 September 2026 and one layout-correction request in the same conversation on 25 September. Both sessions showed the Moderato account plan and K3 High in the composer; the underlying serving checkpoint was not exposed.
- First file: The source facts, prompt and checks were fixed before submission. Kimi adjusted table widths during its first response. We retained the first delivered DOCX without a follow-up or regeneration on that date.
- Correction: We compared the separate revised DOCX with the original and inspected both pages in Kimi/WPS. No manual repair or second correction request was made. The file comparison found “keep with next” and “keep lines together” settings on the section heading and first bullet, plus added internal paragraph identifiers. The change was therefore not confined to those two paragraphs, although text, table content, fonts and margins were preserved.
- Scope: One typed fictional brief and its layout correction. Uploading an existing source file, tracked changes, comments, PDF output and desktop Word editing were outside this test.
