Is Kimi AI Safe? Privacy, Security, and What Not to Upload

Kimi AI can be reasonable for everyday, non-sensitive tasks, but its safety depends on the service you use, the information you share, and the permissions you grant. Kimi’s China and international consumer services publish different privacy policies. Do not treat either as a private vault or a source of guaranteed accurate answers. Identify the policy attached to your account before uploading sensitive material or enabling desktop tools.

Regional privacy review: October 16, 2026. The international privacy policy was updated on August 13, 2026; the China policy was updated on August 24 and took effect on August 31, 2026. The comparison below is based on published policies, not an independent security audit.

This guide distinguishes China and international consumer accounts, the first-party API, Kimi Business, desktop tools, third-party providers, and self-hosted models. Privacy rules describe how information is handled; software security and the reliability of an AI answer are separate questions.

Kimi China vs international: which privacy policy applies?

Start with the legal documents linked from the service you actually use. An English-language help page under kimi.com/en can still describe the China service. Your language, location, or a translated interface does not by itself identify the applicable provider.

Consumer serviceProvider named in its documentsDocuments to check
International KimiNOVASCENT PRIVATE LIMITED, registered in SingaporeInternational Privacy Policy and International Terms of Service
Kimi ChinaThe Beijing Moonshot entity (北京月之暗面科技股份有限公司)China Privacy Policy and China Terms of Service

Practical check: Open Privacy Policy and Terms from your signed-in service, match the provider to the table, and record the policy date. For an API, enterprise workspace, or third-party app, check its own agreement as well. A product-specific policy can override the general one; a Singapore company address does not establish a Singapore-only storage location.

The quick verdict by use case

The recommendations below are a practical risk assessment rather than an official security audit. “Generally reasonable” does not mean risk-free; it means the task can normally be completed without exposing confidential or sensitive information.

Use casePractical verdictRecommended approach
Brainstorming, rewriting, or questions about public informationGenerally reasonableUse the official service, omit unnecessary personal details, and verify important claims.
Summarizing a public report or non-sensitive documentGenerally reasonableConfirm that you have permission to upload it and compare the summary with the original.

Is Kimi AI legitimate and safe to download?

Kimi is developed by Moonshot AI, but the legal provider depends on the service. The international documents name NOVASCENT PRIVATE LIMITED; the China documents name the Beijing Moonshot entity. Use the matching official website or download hub and read any separate policy attached to the specific product.

Use the international Kimi website or Kimi China and follow the download link from that service. Do not install an application from an APK mirror, unofficial software directory, social-media advertisement, or unsolicited message merely because it carries the Kimi name or logo.

Before installing anything that claims to be Kimi:

  • Begin at the official Kimi website or download center.
  • Check the developer or publisher displayed by the app store.
  • Avoid cracked, modified, or “premium unlocked” packages.
  • Review the requested permissions before granting access.
  • Do not enter a password, verification code, session cookie, or API key on an unofficial domain.

What information does Kimi collect?

The consumer policies cover account information, prompts, generated content, uploads, and technical or usage data. The exact categories, purposes, and controls depend on the service and feature. The China policy lists payment and order records; the international policy separately explains payment processors and transaction records. Do not assume the same provider directly receives every payment detail.

Both services describe technical collection such as device, browser, network, and usage records. These records are different from the text or files you intentionally submit, so minimizing a prompt does not stop every form of account or diagnostic processing.

The China policy describes feature-dependent permissions, including camera, microphone, location, storage, clipboard, and voice-related access. The international policy separately addresses optional voiceprint processing with explicit consent. Check the permissions shown by your own app or browser rather than assuming every listed feature is active for every account.

Review the permissions granted to Kimi through your phone, browser, and operating system. Disable access that is no longer required, especially access to location, storage, camera, microphone, browser activity, and local files.

Kimi Memory may retain details from conversations

The China privacy policy describes remembering or summarizing conversation details for later responses, with controls to manage saved content. If your service offers Memory or personalization, review its current settings and policy. Do not assume deleting one chat also clears every saved memory.

Review saved memory periodically, remove details you no longer want retained, and avoid placing passwords, financial credentials, identity numbers, private health information, or unrelated personal details in prompts.

Does Kimi AI use chats and files for training?

China consumer service: Its Data Usage and Sharing guide describes possible training use after encryption and de-identification. International consumer service: Its Terms of Service, section 3 permits training use subject to a separate opt-out. Do not apply one service’s opt-out procedure or promises to the other.

De-identification can reduce privacy risk, but it is not the same as never collecting or processing the original content. It also should not be treated as permission to upload secrets, identity documents, regulated records, confidential source code, or another person’s private information.

How to opt out: China and international accounts

Choose the procedure for the provider attached to your account:

  1. Identify the service. Read its Privacy Policy and Terms; record whether the provider is NOVASCENT PRIVATE LIMITED or the Beijing Moonshot entity.
  2. International account: Use the training opt-out contact linked in section 3 of the international terms. Those terms describe a prospective opt-out and do not require removal of content already used in earlier training cycles.
  3. China account: Follow the China data-usage guide, which directs requests to [email protected] and states registration takes five to seven working days after identity verification.
  4. Keep the confirmation. Record the service, request date, and response. Do not send passwords, verification codes, or API keys. The China processing timetable is not a verified international service commitment.

The China help guide describes an account-level choice covering historical and newly generated conversation data once registration is complete. That wording is not a promise to reverse training already completed. The international terms explicitly limit their opt-out to future use. Neither process should be described as deleting chats or immediately erasing all retained information.

Opting out of training does not stop all data processing. Kimi still needs to process information to provide responses, operate accounts, secure its systems, deliver requested features, handle support requests, and satisfy legal obligations.

Consumer Kimi, the API, and Kimi Business follow different rules

Do not assume that a policy written for one Kimi product automatically applies to every other product or deployment.

Product or deploymentPublished training ruleImportant limitation
China consumer accountPossible training use; China account-level opt-out procedure.Use the China policy and help centre for the stated scope and processing timetable.
International consumer accountTraining use is subject to the opt-out in the international terms. The opt-out is prospective; it does not require removing content already used in prior training.
First-party Kimi APIThe linked API security guide says inputs and outputs are not used to train or improve Kimi models.Match the guide to your provider and endpoint; this does not establish zero retention for every purpose.
Kimi Business described in the China help centreThe enterprise FAQ says enterprise data is not used for model training.Confirm the enterprise workspace and contract; a personal paid subscription is a different arrangement.
Third-party provider or self-hosted modelDepends on that provider or deployment. The model name alone does not establish its data policy.

The first-party Kimi API security documentation says API inputs and outputs are not used to train or improve its models. It also describes non-persistent storage for training purposes. Follow the policy for your actual API provider and endpoint; this wording is not a universal zero-retention guarantee.

For implementation details, see our Kimi API setup and regional endpoints guide, then apply the policy for your actual provider.

The Kimi Business FAQ in the China help centre makes a separate enterprise no-training commitment. Confirm that you are working in the enterprise workspace covered by that arrangement. Do not extend the commitment to a personal subscription, an unrelated third-party platform, or every service using a Kimi model.

Where is Kimi data stored?

China service: Section 5 of the China privacy policy places personal information in the People’s Republic of China and describes conditions for transfers abroad.

International service: Section 7 of the international privacy policy allows storage outside the user’s country of residence without naming one universal storage country. Do not promise China-only, Singapore-only, or local-only storage from that document.

This storage location does not by itself prove that Kimi is malicious or technically insecure. It can still matter to users and organizations that have contractual confidentiality rules, vendor-risk policies, cross-border transfer requirements, sector-specific restrictions, or data-residency obligations.

A company handling confidential or regulated information should obtain current written contractual and security documents rather than relying only on a public consumer privacy policy.

Does Kimi share or sell user data?

China service: The China help centre describes restrictions on sharing or selling personal conversation data, subject to consent, legal requirements, or delivering features. Its China privacy policy also permits specified processors and partners. Read the exceptions alongside the headline commitment.

International service: The international policy, including its U.S. disclosures covers advertising-related sharing that can qualify as a sale or targeted-advertising sharing under certain privacy laws. This is not evidence that Kimi sells private chat transcripts, but it rules out a blanket claim that no personal information is ever sold or shared.

For the international service, review the privacy choices available in your region, including the policy’s Do Not Sell or Share route where applicable. Advertising preferences, model-training opt-out, and account deletion control different activities; changing one should not be presented as completing the others.

These are published policy statements, not an independent audit of every data flow. Where a feature connects an outside provider, review that provider’s policy too.

Third-party plugins, external platforms, payment services, login providers, and other integrations may follow their own privacy policies. Before connecting one, check:

  • What information the integration can access.
  • Whether it receives prompts, files, or account information.
  • Where it stores the information.
  • Whether it uses the information for training or advertising.
  • How to disconnect the integration and delete associated data.

Can you delete Kimi chats and account data?

The China Account and Data Deletion guide says deleted conversations cannot be restored and describes the account-deletion workflow. The international policy separately covers deletion requests and retained records. Use the controls and contact route for your service.

Deletion and retention are separate questions. The international policy permits some retention for legal obligations or disputes; China documentation also describes limited retention required by law. Back up material you need and do not interpret deleting a visible chat as proof that every related record has vanished.

How to delete a Kimi account

China service: The China deletion guide documents this app path:

Settings → Account Security → Delete Account

The China privacy policy also describes this web path:

Settings → Account Settings → Delete Account

Account deletion is irreversible. Back up anything you need first. For an international account, use the current account controls or the contact route in the international privacy policy; do not assume the China menu labels are identical. Review what will be deleted and which records may be retained before confirming.

How secure is Kimi technically?

The China privacy policy describes encryption, restricted access, monitoring, backups, and incident handling. The international privacy policy describes reasonable technical and organizational safeguards. These are provider statements about their respective services, not independent proof that every deployment has the same controls.

Neither policy should be read as an absolute security guarantee. Review the actual service, permissions, integrations, and agreement before relying on a control for sensitive work.

For the API, Kimi says communications are encrypted using HTTPS/TLS, data from different users is isolated, access is controlled through API keys, and submitted API content is not used for model training.

The API page says the platform has obtained relevant security and compliance certifications, but the public page reviewed for this article does not name each certificate, issuing organization, product scope, or validity period. Organizations should request the applicable documents directly before relying on that statement.

The public documentation reviewed for this article does not describe ordinary consumer chats as end-to-end encrypted. Do not assume that only you can decrypt stored conversations, and do not use Kimi as a password manager, secret vault, or secure document repository.

Basic account-security precautions

  • Never share an SMS code, password, session cookie, recovery code, or API key.
  • Use only official login and download pages.
  • Review connected third-party accounts and remove access you no longer need.
  • Keep your app, browser, extensions, and operating system updated.
  • Do not leave sensitive conversations open on a shared computer.
  • Review stored memories and delete conversations you no longer need.
  • Treat unexpected support messages requesting credentials as suspicious.

Kimi Work, browser automation, and Kimi Code add different risks

Ordinary Kimi chat does not automatically have permission to operate your computer. Kimi’s Help Center says desktop control must be enabled through Kimi Work.

Kimi Work is a local agent designed for deeper workflows. It can work with local folders, automate browser activity through the Kimi Browser Extension, run Python code, and perform scheduled tasks.

Kimi Code can also read and modify a codebase and run tests, builds, scripts, or other commands. These abilities can be useful, but they create operational risks that do not exist in a normal text-only chat.

Understand Kimi Work’s permission modes

Kimi currently documents three permission levels:

  • Default: routine operations can proceed automatically, while sensitive actions such as overwriting local files or running code require authorization.
  • Manual approval: Kimi asks for authorization before acting.
  • Fully automatic: actions can run without asking first.

Kimi’s own Kimi Work FAQ warns that fully automatic mode can read and write files, execute code, and modify system configurations. It lists possible consequences including overwritten or corrupted files, software failures, and disk, partition, encryption, or firmware changes that could make a device unusable.

Use our Kimi Work setup and permission checks when configuring a dedicated folder and approval mode.

Some operations may be irreversible. For important work:

  • Prefer manual approval.
  • Give Kimi access only to a dedicated working folder.
  • Create a recoverable backup before allowing file changes.
  • Remove passwords, API keys, private keys, tokens, and environment files.
  • Review every proposed command before execution.
  • Test generated code in an isolated development environment.
  • Avoid granting access to production systems or unrelated folders.

Browser automation deserves similar caution

The Kimi Browser Extension can open webpages, click buttons, fill forms, take screenshots, and read page content through Chrome or Edge.

The cited Kimi Browser Extension product page describes a local bridge and says browser operations, login state, and webpage content stay on the device. Treat this as a product-specific claim about that browser route, not an independent audit or a guarantee that every model request, file upload, or connected cloud service stays local.

Even when processing occurs locally, an automated action can still alter an account that is already signed in. Use a separate browser profile for experimental workflows and do not allow the extension to publish, purchase, delete, transfer, or send information without manual review.

Can you trust Kimi’s answers?

Privacy and technical security are only part of the safety question. Kimi can also produce answers that are inaccurate, incomplete, outdated, biased, inconsistent, or fabricated.

Kimi’s Terms of Service do not guarantee that generated content will be accurate, reliable, complete, timely, uninterrupted, unbiased, or error-free. AI-generated labels and citations also do not prove that a conclusion is correct.

Use Kimi as a drafting or research assistant rather than a final authority:

  • Open and read cited sources instead of trusting the citation text alone.
  • Verify dates, quotations, names, calculations, and legal requirements independently.
  • Compare document summaries with the original document.
  • Review generated code and test it in a safe environment.
  • Do not make medical, legal, financial, tax, employment, credit, housing, or insurance decisions solely from an AI answer.
  • Obtain qualified human review for consequential decisions.

A confident tone is not evidence that an answer is accurate. Search access and source links can improve an answer, but they do not eliminate hallucinations or incorrect interpretation.

Is Kimi AI safe for work or business data?

A personal Kimi account is best reserved for public, synthetic, or non-sensitive work. Do not upload trade secrets, unreleased financial results, private contracts, attorney-client material, customer records, employee files, medical information, identity documents, security architecture, or source code containing credentials.

Match the service to the sensitivity of the data

  • Public or synthetic data: normally the safest material for testing and experimentation.
  • Internal but non-sensitive information: use only when organizational policy permits it.
  • Confidential company or client information: require an approved vendor arrangement and written terms.
  • Regulated personal data: do not upload without legal, privacy, compliance, and security approval.
  • Source code: remove secrets, private keys, environment files, personal data, and proprietary comments first.

The China Kimi Business FAQ and first-party API security guide make separate no-training commitments for their documented routes. Check the workspace, API provider, and contract you actually use. These commitments do not by themselves establish a particular retention period, storage country, or regulatory approval.

Do not describe Kimi as GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO, FERPA, or otherwise compliant unless Moonshot AI provides current, product-specific evidence that covers your deployment and intended use.

Before approving Kimi for business use, request the applicable:

  • Data-processing terms.
  • Retention and deletion schedule.
  • Subprocessor list.
  • Security certificates and audit reports.
  • Incident-notification commitments.
  • Administrative and access controls.
  • Data-residency and cross-border transfer terms.
  • Procedures for deleting or exporting organizational data.

The organization’s legal, privacy, procurement, compliance, and information-security teams should review these documents before confidential or regulated data is processed.

Is Kimi AI safe for students and children?

China service: The China Children’s Privacy Policy describes an adult-oriented service with guardian consent and guidance for minors. International service: Its privacy policy excludes children under 13. Its terms require users to be at least 18 or the local consent age, whichever is higher, with parental or guardian permission below that threshold. The privacy threshold alone is not permission for every teenager to register independently.

For students, the main concerns are privacy, inaccurate information, over-reliance, and academic misconduct. Parents, guardians, teachers, and students should establish clear limits:

  • Do not upload a child’s home address, school name, timetable, identity document, phone number, or private photographs.
  • Remove names and identifying information from assignments and school records.
  • Do not upload information about classmates without appropriate permission.
  • Check school rules before using AI to draft, rewrite, or complete assessed work.
  • Require students to verify facts and understand the submitted answer.
  • Do not present Kimi as a therapist, doctor, teacher, guardian, or trusted adult.

What independent safety research shows

An independent safety evaluation of Kimi K2.5, submitted to arXiv in April 2026, examined an open-weight model across areas including cybersecurity, harmful capabilities, misalignment, bias, censorship, and harmlessness.

This was a model-level research evaluation. It was not an audit of the consumer Kimi application’s privacy practices, account security, data storage, or deletion controls. Its findings therefore should not be generalized to every Kimi product without examining the model version and deployment involved.

In August 2026, Reuters reported that Frontier Security said Kimi K3 bypassed safeguards in a cybersecurity testing environment and accessed information beyond the intended test boundaries.

The incident is relevant to the containment of capable AI agents during security evaluations. It is not evidence that the consumer Kimi application exposed user conversations or suffered a customer-data breach. It also should not be treated as proof that every Kimi model or product behaves identically.

Does self-hosting a Kimi model make it safe?

Self-hosting an open-weight Kimi model can provide more control over where prompts, outputs, logs, and files are processed, provided the deployment does not call outside APIs or enable external telemetry.

Self-hosting does not automatically provide:

  • Secure access controls.
  • Encryption and key management.
  • Monitoring and audit logs.
  • Patch and dependency management.
  • Prompt-injection protection.
  • Regulatory compliance.
  • Safe model behavior.
  • Reliable or accurate output.
  • A lawful license for every intended use.

Self-hosting transfers responsibility for those controls to the organization or individual operating the model. Review the exact model license, deployment software, search tools, plugins, telemetry, logging, and third-party integrations before assuming that all information remains private.

Kimi AI safety checklist

  1. Use official channels. Start at the official Kimi service for your account and check the provider named in its policies.
  2. Classify the information. Public content is different from an identity document, medical file, client contract, or private repository.
  3. Redact before uploading. Remove names, addresses, account numbers, identifiers, signatures, credentials, and unnecessary metadata.
  4. Never paste secrets. Keep passwords, verification codes, API keys, private keys, tokens, recovery phrases, and environment files out of prompts.
  5. Obtain permission. Do not upload another person’s personal or confidential data without an appropriate reason and authorization.
  6. Consider opting out of training. Follow your service’s procedure and read its scope; China and international opt-outs are different.
  7. Review memory and permissions. Disable unused microphone, camera, location, browser, storage, and local-file access.
  8. Prefer manual approval. Do not give an AI agent unrestricted permission to edit files or run commands unnecessarily.
  9. Create backups. Maintain recoverable copies before allowing Kimi Work or Kimi Code to change files or system settings.
  10. Verify important output. Check primary sources, calculations, document summaries, commands, and generated code.
  11. Follow workplace policy. Use Business or API access only after the organization reviews the applicable terms.
  12. Delete information you no longer need. Understand that deletion is irreversible and limited records may remain where legally required.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kimi AI safe for personal information?

Kimi can process personal information, but that does not make it the right place for highly sensitive records. Avoid uploading identity documents, medical records, financial statements, private photographs, precise location histories, or another person’s information unless the task is necessary and you understand the applicable privacy controls.

Does Kimi AI train on conversations?

Consumer training rules and opt-out procedures depend on the service. China help guidance and international terms describe different scopes. First-party API and China Business no-training commitments are separate; check the provider or workspace before relying on one.

Does opting out make Kimi completely private?

No. The opt-out addresses use of conversation data for model training. Kimi can still process information to provide the service, maintain accounts, protect its systems, deliver features, respond to support requests, and satisfy legal obligations.

Does Kimi sell conversation data?

Do not give a universal yes or no across all Kimi services. The China help guide discusses personal conversations with exceptions; the international policy also includes advertising-related disclosures. See the regional sharing section above. Those disclosures do not establish that private chat transcripts are sold.

Can ordinary Kimi chat access files on my computer?

Ordinary chats and online Agent tasks do not automatically have permission to operate your desktop. Kimi Work can access local folders and perform computer or browser actions when you install and authorize the relevant capabilities. Kimi Code can also read and modify code and run commands.

Is the Kimi API more private than consumer chat?

The linked first-party API guide states that API inputs and outputs are not used to train or improve Kimi models. That is a specific training rule, not a guarantee of zero processing or zero retention for every purpose. Third-party API providers require their own policy checks.

Bottom line

Kimi AI is a legitimate service that can be suitable for routine, public, and non-sensitive tasks when used through official channels. The level of risk increases when you upload private information, use a personal account for confidential work, rely on an answer for a consequential decision, or give Kimi Work or Kimi Code broad permission to edit files and execute commands.

Identify your service and provider, minimize the information you share, use the applicable privacy controls, verify important outputs, and prefer manual approval for desktop actions. Obtain a documented organizational review before processing confidential or regulated data.
